Dream Internship
Date: July 2022 – February 2023
Role: Junior Graphic Designer
Through my 8 month internship at Dream Unlimited, I worked on multiple projects that challenged and enhanced my design skills and knowledge. I learned a lot about designing in print and digital formats, as well as how to communicate effectively with clients, team members and various stakeholders.
Dream Brand Guidelines
Working on the brand guidelines was a great way for me to learn more about the Dream brand while onboarding into the company. I was tasked with laying out this document and compiling all the different branding elements such as logos, colours and type. I also created mockups and templates for other designers to reference.
Industrial Brochures
This brochure template was made to advertise industrial properties. We used bold type and imagery along with minimal layouts in order to put focus on the properties, while elevating them at the same time. As there were many properties, it was a challenge to make sure all the information was consistent and correct on every brochure, especially when details were constantly being updated.
Social Media Redesign
The social media team at Dream needed templates for their social media redesign. I created multiple different designs and options such as carousels, profiles, stats, awards and quote posts. I also designed the strategy presentation in which the posts were proposed.
People & Culture
Throughout the year, I designed and art directed multiple internal advertisements for announcements in the office. These took the form of printed posters as well as E-blasts.
Logo Animation
I was tasked with updating our logo animations. The goal of these animations were to have a quick intro/outro for things like social media posts. The challenges were to keep the animations short and simple, and to have a fun, yet realistic and professional feeling to them.
Reflection
My time at Dream has been exciting and productive in so many ways! Through the multiple projects and experiences working with the marketing team and its clients and stakeholders, there’s so much in terms of design and working knowledge that I learned.
In terms of design and technical skills, I learned:
How to properly construct pages in Indesign (using margins, padding, not overflowing text boxes etc.)
How to make professional quality presentations and templates in Powerpoint
How to make engaging advertisements through effective typography and art direction
How to visually communicate complex pieces of information like statistics and building information
In terms of soft skills in the workplace, I learned:
How to communicate with clients effectively, even during pressured times
How and when to communicate with higher ups in the company
How to build discipline and be a consistent, productive team member
Although I learned a lot at Dream, I know that there’s still a lot to discover. I hope in the future that I can continue building my design and soft skills in new ways, as well as cultivating leadership skills in the workplace.
